Is Galley Academy training or a job?

Galley Academy is a structured training programme, not employment. Here is what that means for your status during the course.

Is Galley Academy training or a job?

Galley Academy is a structured training programme. When you join, you attend as a student, not as a worker or employee. The course is designed to give you practical cooking skills, supervised experience, and preparation for future work, but attending Galley Academy does not mean you are working professionally during the week.

This means that as a Galley Academy student:

  • You are not joining as paid crew

  • You are not employed by Quarterdeck through the course

  • You are attending a structured training programme under the supervision of a dedicated culinary instructor

If any part of the course takes place on a yacht, the designated instructor or skipper is the person responsible for the yacht and its operation. You are there to learn under supervision, not to act as onboard hospitality staff.

What is still required of you

Being a student does not reduce your obligations during the week. You are still required to follow all safety briefings and instructions, comply with conduct standards, carry appropriate travel insurance, and disclose any medical conditions or other requirements that may affect your safe participation before the course begins.

What about after the course?

If your goal is to work professionally as a host after Galley Academy, the next step is Host Academy, which is Quarterdeck's training and assessment pathway for that role. Professional host work involves separate requirements including right to work, visas where applicable, and meeting the standards of Host Academy assessment.
