Host Academy is competitive
We receive significantly more Host Academy applications than we can accept. In a typical year, around one in five applicants is offered a place.
The most common reason we cannot offer someone a place is not a lack of passion or motivation: it is a lack of documented cooking or hospitality experience. When we have more qualified applicants than spots, we have to prioritise candidates whose track record gives us the highest confidence they will pass and deliver at the standard guests expect. That means professional kitchen experience, catering work, or a strong demonstrated history of cooking for groups. When that evidence is missing, the application is very difficult to progress, even if the person is clearly committed.
This is exactly what Galley Academy is for
Galley Academy was designed for people who are serious about a career at sea but do not yet have the professional kitchen record that Host Academy requires. It gives you a week of intensive, real cooking training in a yacht kitchen environment, with an instructor who will push you, assess you, and give you honest feedback on your readiness.
By the end of the week you will have:
Documented completion of a Quarterdeck culinary course
A written instructor assessment of your cooking ability and readiness for Host Academy
Practical experience cooking three services a day in a galley setting
A much clearer picture of whether the pace and environment of Host Academy suits you
Is it a guaranteed route into Host Academy?
No. Completing Galley Academy does not automatically secure you a Host Academy place. Host Academy has its own entry standards and assessment, and those do not change. What Galley Academy does is give you the best possible foundation to meet those standards, and gives us documented, first-hand evidence of your cooking ability and character from one of our own instructors. That carries real weight in your application.
If your Galley Academy instructor assesses you as ready for Host Academy, that assessment travels with your application and significantly strengthens it.
