What is the difference between a Host/Chef and a Steward or Stewardess?

Learn the difference between a Host/Chef and a Steward or Stewardess on Quarterdeck, including what level of cooking, hospitality, and guest-facing service you can usually expect from each role.

At Quarterdeck, Chef and Host mean the same combined role.

A Host/Chef is expected to combine strong cooking ability with strong guest-facing hospitality. The difference is usually more about wording than a different job.

What does a Host/Chef do?

A Host/Chef is there to handle both food and guest experience.

This usually includes:

  • daily breakfast and lunch

  • provisioning and trip planning

  • guest hosting and social presence

  • table setup and service

  • interior organisation

  • around two dinners across a typical week, depending on the setup

A more food-led chef may cook more dinners, while a more host-led profile may focus more on daily breakfast, lunch, and hospitality flow. In practice, both are part of the same combined Quarterdeck role.

Is Host a lower level version of Chef?

No.

In Quarterdeck’s model, Host is a yachting-specific term and should not be understood as a lower-level role. A Quarterdeck Host/Chef is generally expected to deliver a higher level of combined cooking and hospitality than what many people might associate with a more junior chalet-based role.

QD only lists higher-level Host/Chefs with a combination of strong cooking skills and strong social skills.

What is a Steward or Stewardess then?

A Steward or Stewardess is usually more interior- and service-led.

This role is generally more focused on:

  • service and presentation

  • housekeeping and interior upkeep

  • guest care

  • drinks service

  • organisation and cleanliness

Depending on their background and competency, a Steward or Stewardess may also be able to provide Host/Chef-style support, including some cooking. However, this would usually be at a slightly lower culinary standard than a dedicated Quarterdeck Host/Chef.

Why are Quarterdeck Host/Chefs different?

Most Quarterdeck Host/Chefs have built their experience on smaller sailing yachts, where one person often has to manage cooking, provisioning, service, organisation, and guest interaction at the same time.

That tends to create a more rounded profile:

  • stronger independence

  • practical cooking ability

  • comfort in tougher working environments

  • strong social and guest-facing skills

  • ability to handle multiple responsibilities at once

Many have developed their careers by working their way up in demanding sailing environments before moving into broader hospitality or more premium placements.

Which role should I choose?

Choose a Host/Chef if you want one person who can combine strong cooking with confident guest-facing hospitality.

Choose a Steward or Stewardess if your priority is service, presentation, interior support, and guest care, with cooking as a possible secondary skill rather than the core focus.

In summary

At Quarterdeck, Chef and Host describe the same combined role. A Host/Chef is expected to deliver both strong cooking and strong hospitality. A Steward or Stewardess is generally more service- and interior-led, though some may also be able to provide lighter Host/Chef-style support. Quarterdeck’s listed Host/Chefs are selected for having both high-level cooking ability and strong social skills.
