Yes — preparation is key. Host Academy is an intensive training program, and while 90% of students pass, it’s not guaranteed. To give yourself the best chance, we strongly advise you to arrive prepared:
Practice your favorite recipes: You’ll be expected to cook daily on board. Arrive ready with a handful of go-to dishes you can confidently deliver within the time and space limitations of a yacht.
Bring your own small tools if essential: Think about utensils or gadgets you rely on to cook well — if they’re crucial, pack them. We provide the basics, but your own kit may make things easier.
Read the Pre-Academy Host Prep Guide: This document outlines what’s expected and how to set yourself up for success. (send to students that are accepted).
Mindset matters: Be ready to learn, adapt, and show resilience. The course tests not only your skills but also how well you work in a team of skippers and hosts under pressure.
Quarterdeck invests heavily in each student. Coming prepared shows you’re serious and greatly increases your chance of success — and of being invited to work during the season.
