Do I need a visa to attend Academy?

Find out whether you need a visa to attend Quarterdeck Academy, when a tourist visa may still be required, and how Academy travel differs from work visa rules for skippers and hosts.

Updated over a month ago

In most cases, you do not need a work visa to attend a Quarterdeck Academy course because you are joining as a student or trainee, not as an employee.

Quarterdeck Academy is treated as a training experience, not as paid work. If your course takes place on a yacht, the designated instructor or skipper is the person responsible for the yacht. You are attending to learn, not to work.

However, you may still need a tourist visa or other permission to enter the country, depending on:

  • your nationality

  • the country where the Academy takes place

  • how long you plan to stay

It is your responsibility to check the entry requirements for your destination before you travel. Always check the relevant embassy, consulate, or official government travel website well in advance.

Quarterdeck cannot arrange visas on your behalf. However, once your place is secured and your first payment has been made, we may be able to provide a confirmation of participation letter to support your visa application if needed.
