Yes. Skipper Third-Party Liability Insurance is mandatory for all skippers working with Quarterdeck. Without valid coverage, you cannot be assigned to yachts.
This requirement exists because:
You are personally responsible as the skipper of the yacht. Even though the yacht is chartered and insured, claims from accidents, collisions, or guest injuries can be made directly against you.
Charter company insurance does not protect you as an individual skipper. Their insurance covers their vessel, not your personal liability.
Skipper insurance ensures you are protected if you are held liable for:
Damage to another vessel, marina, or dockSkipper Insurance
Injury to guests, crew, or third parties4881
Environmental damage such as fuel/oil pollution4881
Loss of charter revenue for an operator if a yacht is damaged and out of service.
Types of coverage
Third-Party Liability (mandatory): The minimum required. Covers third-party damage and injury. Typical policies range from €100,000 (Allianz Croatia) to €6,000,000 (Pantaenius).
Deposit Insurance: Some policies (e.g. Allianz Croatia) also cover up to €2,500 of lost security deposit with a 5% deductible.
Comprehensive cover (optional): Extends protection to the yacht you are skippering. More expensive, but recommended if you want maximum peace of mindSkipper Insurance.
Costs & providers
Annual Third-Party Liability premiums range from €200–€350, with popular providers including Allianz, Pantaenius, Yacht Pool, and WienerSkipper Insurance. Fully Comprehensive policies cost more (e.g. €500–€650).
Key exclusions to remember
If you sail without the correct license, coverage is void.
If you are intoxicated or grossly negligent, coverage is void.
Quarterdeck requires proof of valid skipper insurance before your first assignment. Without it, you cannot work.
