Failing Academy is not the end of the road. Around 90% of candidates pass on their first attempt. Failure to pass is usually due to either:
(a) insufficient practical skills (like docking under pressure)
or
(b) weaker social/communication abilities in a team setting.
If you fail:
You’ll receive clear feedback on why.
Depending on space, you may be offered the chance to rejoin the following Academy week, or to attend our Sailing Academy to build up the skills you need before trying again.
Many candidates who fail once succeed the next time once they’ve trained more or gained confidence.
If you fail due to poor communication or social skills we will not offer you a second chance.
Tip: If you’re worried about your current level of sailing or social experience, consider applying to Sailing Academy + Skipper Academy in one go. The extra week of training makes a huge difference and dramatically improves your chances of passing.
We want you to succeed, but Academy is tough for a reason — you’ll be leading guests on 40–50ft yachts in high-pressure situations. Come prepared, train hard, and use the experience as fuel to grow.
