How can I best prepare before Skipper Academy to make sure I pass?

Updated over 6 months ago

Skipper Academy is intensive and designed to test your readiness for real charter work. Passing isn’t automatic — around 10% of candidates don’t make it through. The best way to set yourself up for success is to arrive fully prepared:

  • Sailing practice: Make sure you’ve recently helmed yachts of 35–50ft, ideally practicing Med-mooring, docking in crosswinds, and handling tight marinas. Dinghy and small-boat experience is useful, but large yacht handling skills are essential.

  • Theory refresh: Brush up on navigation, COLREGs, knots, VHF procedure, and basic chartwork. Being able to confidently explain and apply theory will be part of your evaluation.

  • Documents in order: Double-check that you have your skipper license, VHF certificate, and First Aid certification ready. Missing paperwork can prevent you from passing.

  • Mindset: Skippering with Quarterdeck isn’t just sailing — it’s about leading crews, managing guests, and keeping energy high. Be prepared to show leadership, communication, and adaptability throughout the week.

  • Physical preparation: You’ll be docking, anchoring, and sailing long days in the sun. Arrive fit, rested, and ready to work hard.

Worried you don't have enough experience to be accepted to academy, or pass? Apply to Sailing Academy before Skipper Academy, it's a "pre-academy week" designed to give the extra time at the helm needed.

You will be admitted to Skipper Academy if you are admitted to Sailing Academy.
