Packing smart will make your Academy week much smoother. Yachts have very limited storage, so avoid hard suitcases β€” bring a soft duffel bag or backpack.

Clothing:

  • Quick-dry sportswear and swimwear

  • Light evening clothes for dinners ashore

  • Warm/waterproof layers for cold nights, wind, or rain

  • A hat/cap for sun protection

Shoes:

  • Non-marking deck shoes/sailing sneakers

  • Flip-flops/sandals for shore

  • Avoid black soles (they leave marks on deck)

Gear & Practical Items:

  • Sunglasses with retainer strap

  • Strong sunscreen & lip balm

  • Sailing gloves (optional, but recommended for rope work)

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Small towel + toiletries

  • Seasickness tablets (if needed)

  • Head torch or small flashlight

  • Phone charger & portable power bank

Documents:

  • Passport/ID

  • Skipper license

  • VHF license

  • First Aid certificate

  • Proof of personal travel insurance (required)

  • Any skipper liability/third-party insurance (recommended to get if/when you pass before your first assignment)

Sleeping & Living:

  • Light sleeping bag or sleeping sheet (bedding basics provided on board, but many prefer their own layer) - this is optional, and also weather dependant. Check if the nights will be cold at your academy.

  • Earplugs & eye mask (cabins can be noisy/bright)
